In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic it’s incredibly important to make sure you have the right salon PPE available. PPE should be there for both your team and your clients. The official government guidance on reopening your salon covers everything from PPE to hygiene procedures, social distancing and more. But most importantly, the rules are clear on the importance of PPE face shields in order to protect staff and customers from the virus.

However, a survey by the National Hair and Beauty Federation found that 74% of salons were still unsure of what kind of PPE they should be wearing.

What is salon PPE?

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) refers to any type of clothing or garment that protects the wearer from injury, infection or other external hazards. Most hairdressers, barbers, salons and beauticians will already be somewhat familiar with PPE. For example, disposable gloves and possibly even face masks. However, with the ongoing threat of Coronavirus it is essential that salon staff members also wear PPE face shields.

Is PPE compulsory for hairdresser salons?

The latest government advice is that ‘close contact services’ such as salons, hairdressers, barbers and beauticians should wear PPE as part of best practice. It is the recommendation that when the full 2 metre social distance cannot be maintained full face shields are worn. Additionally, face masks can also be worn underneath the face shields for further protection.

How to wear a face shield

For maximum protection, the face shield should extend below the chin vertically and to the ears on the periphery. It’s important that there are no gaps that can allow droplets to reach the face.
